The Museu Nacional do Azulejo

The Museu Nacional do Azulejo, or tile museum, was next on our list.  The museum is located in the former Convent of Madre Deus, founded by Queen D. Leonor in 1509. The collection features decorative ceramic azulejos from the second half of the 15th century to the present day. In addition, it includes ceramics and porcelain from the 19th to the 20th century.

The permanent exhibition began with a display of the materials and techniques used for manufacturing tiles.

The two artists shown above have done extensive tilework for the Metro. A film explained the importance they place on placing art where people will pass by it and possibly be touched by it.


I liked this piece called, "The Little Yellow Hat."
