Thousands of years ago, the Vikings sailed up rivers and across the open sea throughout Europe and the North Atlantic area. They spent most of their time farming, hunting, and fishing to sustain their families and communities. Raiding was a seasonal activity. Vikings were known for their hygiene (although fierce photos seem to differ) as spoons were found for cleaning out ears. They used lye soap to rid themselves of bugs, and this turned their hair lighter.
The Viking Ship Museum is built around the five original Viking ships from Skuldelev and tells the story of how the Vikings changed the world with their ships.
Without ships, no Viking Age.
