Rowing a Viking Ship in the Roskilde Fjord

In Copenhagen, we had an opportunity to row a Viking ship. It was tricky boarding the ship and even trickier rowing, but our leader, Borg, was a terrific instructor.

The guides began with instructions, and then we put on life preservers.

Borg explains the commands and how we'll get this craft moving.

The oars were extremely heavy and unwieldy to move. It was necessary to back them out behind me without hitting anyone.

Once the oar was placed in the oar lock, it had to be put under the rope so that it would stay there. Another deck hand explained that the rope was stretched, so he helped hold mine tight.

Finally our oars were in position and somewhat even.

But then they quickly weren't:

Still, with Borg's help, we eventually began rowing.

Next, they decided to hoist a massive sail made out of flax so we could see/feel what it was like to be under sail.

It was a lot of fun, and we successfully rowed back to port.
