Hula History and Lessons

After a scrumptious buffet dinner at Prince Waikiki with loads of shrimp, Alaska king crab, many kinds of fish, veggies, prime rib, etc. we were treated to a lecture on the history of hula by Hiilani Shibata, a cultural expert.

In most authentic examples of hula, the dance is a meditative dance form in which the dancer choreographs the lyrics through tender, emotive movements. None of the gyrating commonly seen in troupes. It was truly beautiful.

Next Hiilania and her students demonstrated many different hula dances, and then it was our turn to take to the floor with lessons. A friend video taped me, but I'm unable at the moment to load it.

I was successful with the feet - step, step, tap, to the right, and then repeat to the left. But when the expressive hand motions were added, I got a bit mixed up. Everyone had a good time. Some were very talented as they obviously had dance experience.
