Pearl Harbor National Memorial and the USS Arizona Memorial

After breakfast, we traveled by bus to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Once inside, we received an audio guide to tour the museum.

This mural shows the path of the attack. 1177 crew were killed on the USS Arizona in less than ten minutes.

Model of the USS Arizona.

This magnificent sculpture by Alfred Preis is in the middle of the courtyard and also is incorporated into the USS Arizona Memorial.

After viewing the film, a ranger spoke to us. He said, "This is not a tourist site. It is a water-locked tomb with 1177 people inside. Please proceed with appropriate respect."

We took this boat to the USS Arizona Memorial.

The dimensions of the USS Arizona.

We received orchid leis at the start of the Road Scholar tour and were told we could present them at the USS Arizona Memorial, if we wanted. Some of us left them near the names of the dead, others cut the leis and dropped the orchids into the water.

You can see some of the orchids presented floating out to sea.

Notice the Tree of Life motif on either side of the center wall.

Some parts of the USS Arizona are visible beneath the water.

The maps below show which parts are visible and what has been added to the site.
