Thalori Lodge in Kapetaniana

This morning, we drove 2 hours to Thalori Lodge, an eco tourism site, nestled just beyond the town of Kapetaniana in the Asterousia mountains. The road up was very, very winding and once we reached the lodge, we were at an altitude of 2,624 feet. The drive reminded me of our trip years ago into Denali. Fortunately, our bus driver, Yagos, was a very skilled driver!

The drive presented yet another view of the varied regions in Crete. There were many olive orchards as well as parched mountainous land.

Part of the road to Thalori Lodge.
We saw many small country churches along the way.

The town of Kapetaniana is surrounded by the Asterousia Mountains.

Once at the lodge, we had a tasty snack of Cretan pancakes and coffee.

                                             Full disclosure: I had seconds...

I had to include this "Flying Nun" picture to show how fierce the wind was... That's the Libyan Sea in the distance.

We took this jeep down another very steep, winding path to the farm where they raise animals and vegetables.

The lambs gather at the manger after Marcos serves up the hay.

And then the lambs are set loose to graze on the mountainous slopes.

The highest point the Asterousia Mountains is Kofina’s peak (4,038 feet) in the distance.

  1. You could give Sally Fields a run for her money as the Flying Nun! Love the pictures of the sheep being fed, and then being let loose.
